Arcas Building Solutions were appointed via open tender through NEPO framework to carry out the remodelling of the existing Haltwhistle Former Middle School to create a new Primary School.
The scheme consisted of internal and external remodelling and refurbishment of all elements of the existing school building over three floors to become a 1.5 form entry primary school. The works also include for the remodelling of the existing gym to operate as a Children’s Centre.
The external works included the replacement of single glazed windows with new curtain walling to the three storey building which required extensive scaffolding to provide safe access to the work areas, provision of decked terrace area after the removal of the access scaffold and nursery play space with new fencing and alterations to exiting hard surfaces to allow safe access and egress to the Children’s Centre.
Large areas of the existing roof were removed back to the original structure and new roof decking & coverings installed to the existing hall prior to completing the fit out to these areas.
The internal works include for re-decoration of classroom and administration areas including new floor and ceiling finishes complete with new mechanical and electrical installations. The works to all floors included major contractor designed temporary propping works to allow the structural remodelling of the existing school to be carried out with major mechanical & electrical modifications required for the new layouts.
The introduction of a change resulted in the main hall having the existing windows removed with new curtain walling and an overhaul of the internal hall with new lighting, ventilation, ceilings and decoration as well as increase of the stage and introduction of new sliding partition. All of which were completed in the original programme and handed over on time to allow a September opening.
