Gateshead-based Arcas Building Solutions has been appointed as the lead contractor for the ambitious refurbishment of a grade two-listed building situated on the corner of Grainger Street and Monument in Newcastle. This historic project will transform the landmark into a brand-new flagship branch for Newcastle Building Society (NBS), offering the public access to parts of the building that have been closed off for decades.
Partnering with Silverstone Building Consultancy, whose Newcastle office will provide project management services, Arcas Building Solutions is set to oversee the redevelopment of the 8,400 sq ft, five-storey building. The restoration is part of a larger plan to preserve the building’s historical integrity while breathing new life into this prime city centre location, which is part of the Newcastle Central Conservation Area.
Bringing New Life to a Historic Building
The building, originally constructed in the 1830s, has seen several retail tenants over the years, including high street names like Boots and French Connection, which vacated the premises in 2023. The upcoming refurbishment will not only return the building to its former glory but also introduce a blend of modern functionality and community-driven spaces.
Plans for the NBS Monument branch include the creation of modern office and event spaces on the upper floors, while the ground floor will house the Newcastle Building Society branch. More excitingly, the lower ground floor will be transformed into a space dedicated to local charities and organisations, reinforcing NBS’s commitment to supporting the local community.
Project Significance
As lead contractor, Arcas Building Solutions is tasked with ensuring the refurbishment stays true to the building’s heritage while delivering modern, sustainable spaces. This involves careful attention to detail and coordination with Silverstone Building Consultancy to manage the project seamlessly.
“We’re thrilled to be part of this incredible opportunity to rejuvenate such a significant landmark in Newcastle,” said a spokesperson from Arcas Building Solutions. “Our team is committed to preserving the character of the building while ensuring it meets the needs of a modern society.”
With work well underway, the transformation is expected to be completed in time for the Monument branch’s opening in 2025. Once complete, this flagship branch will offer a mix of public, commercial, and charitable spaces, making it a true hub for the local community.
