In 2017, Arcas Building Solutions proudly completed a significant transformation of Northumbria University’s Student and Library Services at City Campus. The project, a multi-million-pound investment, revamped the original 1969 library into a vibrant, open space designed to centralise essential support services for students. This extensive renovation has since become a central feature of the campus, embodying the university’s commitment to creating a welcoming and functional environment for students and staff alike.

Overcoming Unique Challenges to Create a Modern Campus Hub

Reflecting on the project, it’s clear that one of our greatest challenges was navigating the building’s unique structural limitations. Situated in a landlocked area with restricted access on three sides, the site required meticulous planning and innovative logistics. Delivering specialised structural components was no easy feat; the narrow site entrance could only accommodate rigid vehicles, making the use of larger, articulated vehicles impossible. Nevertheless, our team adapted, coordinating deliveries precisely to keep the project on track.

Our work involved major demolition and remodelling of the two-storey administration and library building, expanding the gross floor area to create a more functional space. A key design feature was the introduction of a new lightwell, which allowed natural light to cascade down through the building, creating a bright, inviting atmosphere on both the ground and first floors. This lightwell has since become a defining element of Student Central, fostering an environment that promotes learning and interaction.

Balancing Heritage Preservation with Modern Design

Throughout the renovation, we were mindful of preserving the building’s historical character while introducing modern design elements. Several existing features, including artwork that had become part of the building’s identity, were carefully protected and integrated into the new design. This approach allowed us to honour the university’s heritage while updating the space to meet the needs of today’s students.

The installation of a new steel canopy and curtain walling across all elevations was another significant improvement. Designed to minimise solar gain, the curtain walling enhanced the building’s energy efficiency and added a sleek, contemporary look. Completing these upgrades on a tight summer schedule required careful coordination, but we successfully handed over the project before the start of the academic year, allowing students to return to a refreshed and inspiring space.
